Reality

The following are notes taken from a discussion of REALITY as defined in ACIM by Aaron Abke 1.Reality can not cause suffering because reality is non duel. Only duality can cause suffering. 2. Vision is what we attain when we go beyond individual perception. Perception is subjective because every individual experiences the world according to what is in their mind. Conditioned thoughts make up our mind. We, however, are NOT our mind. Vision is a much less distorted view of reality. 3. In duality we are caught between the waves of pain or pleasure, desire or fear. 4. Whenever judgement enters, reality slips away. 5. The world we experience is a perfect mirror of how we see ourselves. If we hate ourselves we see a world full of hate. If we love ourselves we see a world full of love. Both are projections but love is the mind seeing reality clearly and suffering is the mind mispercieving reality. 6. When mind is cleansed of its misperceptions and errors, its projection of reality is what we describe as love. In other words; SELF looking at SELF. GOD looking at GOD. REALITY looking at REALITY. 7. Reality is like a compass that always points to truth. Anything that points away causes us to become lost. 8. Suffering is a signpost that indicates we have strayed away from the truth in our thinking. 9. The only shadows in reality are the ones we conjure up. 10. What we call evil can only manifest in the absence of God. 11. The will of God; everyone has the free will to create the world they wish to exist in AND to escape it. 12. Reality can not be possessed or pushed away. The practice is to let it come to you. REALITY=LOVE=GOD 13. The ego is a distortion filter as it only sees along the binary continuum of good/bad, desire/fear, pain/pleasure, right/wrong. REALITY is non dual. It is perfect unity in love. When the ego experiences love, compassion, etc it is seeing a less distorted view of reality.

Guided meditation on your true nature

This is a very beautiful meditation. You can find the guided meditation at 8min44sec into the video. But listening to the entire video will strengthen the message.

A Course In Miracles

I've certainly heard about the course over the years but I never really paid a lot of attention to it. I think this was because of the very heavy use of traditional Christian terminology which proved problematic given my experience with the institutional church.

Recently I came across this guy Aaron Abke who has a YouTube channel and  Playlist on the channel devoted to ACIM and I must say his commentary has really hit home and resonates with something deep and true, so much so I have begun to take some notes in an effort to better internalize the teachings. Of course the goal is to actually bring this wisdom into practice in daily life, as with all yoga teachings.

Here are a few notes I have taken recently.

The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.

You do not breathe the lungs or beat the heart nor do you think the thoughts. You can only choose to pay attention to thoughts. Thoughts are not who you are.

We become imprisoned by thoughts by identifying with them

Thoughts are not real. We give them fuel by paying attention to them. Retrain the mind to think thoughts that  bring you into harmony with your true nature.

The separate self is not real, it is just a collection of thoughts

Nothing that is real can be threatened and nothing unreal exists

When acting and speaking ask is this my true nature acting or speaking

Give attention to thoughts of love, expansion, openness, compassion, kindness, beauty.

The feelings associated with thoughts represent how much attention has been given to them in the past. Be with the emotion and not the thought. Don't feed the thought ( this gives it a sense of realness)and don't suppress the emotion.

God's voice does not always show up as a thought. Higher wisdom is quickly downloaded from source. It can be instant.

God's voice is alive whereas thoughts are dead.

What we give attention to we give reality.

You can not truly see what you are because you are already looking from it. You can only experience what you are in the absence of what you are not.

If you are looking for what you are,  you must be looking from a false point of view.

You can't use the Buddha to seek the Buddha because seeking the Buddha is already a denial of your true nature.

Only the christ nature can see the false. Two chairs in a room. Ego chair and God nature chair. You can not sit in both. Only from the God nature chair can you see what you are nto. From the ego chair you can not see your true nature. The false can't see itself because it always looks true from the position of the ego.

Take your thoughts into self inquiry and see if they align with your true self.

Let your thoughts that don't align with your true nature be like thieves in an empty house. Nothing here to attach to. Nothing here of value.

What thoughts come up that don't align with true nature?

Baba Center Visit in June 2022

We took a little trip to the Baba Center with Claire, Sam, Cosette, and Willa. Everyone enjoyed playing in the warm ocean, though the sea was rough and the undertow considerable limiting water activity to the edge mostly. Cosette and Willa visited Baba's house and Cosette had a chance to lay on Baba's bed, an honor reserved for little babies. This is always a somewhat emotional experience for those in the room watching. There is a kind of magic energy in the stillness and children are quite aware of it too and do not resist the calmness with their own energy.

The Power of Authenticity

I have been discovering lately the freedom that comes with radical acceptance. As I grow older (now 70!) I realize more and more that it is not healthy to ignore or sidestep authenticity in favor of taking care of the other persons prercieved feelings, ideas, or individual perspective on any given topic. This does not mean running roughshod over another persons individual take on the world such as challenging it or judging it. It simply means looking deeply into my own truth and responding (possibly) rather than reacting. Often the response is increasingly the position of not responding. Just listening and reflecting privately can lead to a more fruitful and positive interchange and mutual understanding. A simple response such as "That's interesting!" rather than launching into my own take on an issue or position can diffuse the confrontational nature of reacting where each party tends to shift into defensive postures. Is it authentic to not react? In today's hyper divisive world reacting seems to be the go to response, the quicker the better! But these quick reactions often seem to lead to unsatisfying, if not catastrophic, results. There can be a quieter contemplative authenticity that is very powerful that can shift the energy towards a more positive place. For me at least, the failure to respond authentically has sometimes been linked to fear of exposing my truth; my authentic self. Contrary to what is seen culturally as being powerful, especially for a man, namely a sort of hardened emotional aloofness, authenticity involves revealing vulnerabilities, typically seen as weak for men. I have been extremely lucky to be a part of a long standing group of men dedicated to opening up pathways toward being more authentic, and this has certainly helped me to grow emotionally. I can say without a doubt that these men have helped me claim my authentic self without fear. And every time I respond from that place of authenticity, it feels powerful and liberating!

Silence

I am not sure if any other animal is capable of smiling. Certainly other animals can indicate they are content such as when a dog wags its tail or a cat purrs. But the human smile is really a standout form of letting the other know they are happy. Cosette is just now beginning to connect by smiling and it has tremendous attractive power. The connection is direct and palpable and long lasting, engendering strong emotional bonding. She gifted us today with her brilliant smile which awed us, as it was one of the first clear, unmistakable signals of recognition.

A very beautiful meditation on the nature of birth and death.

Cosette Mai Piland

On December 4th, 2021 our second granddaughter was born in Asheville, North Carolina. She was eagerly awaited and came a week early, much to mom's general happiness. She was 8.5 pounds and 21 inches long, so running out of space for sure. Her sister Willa was overjoyed, but had to wait a little longer before meeting her to give her parents, Sam and Claire, time to recuperate. We were happy to have Willa here at our house a few doors down from her house for 4 days. This was the longest she had been separated from her family, but she handled it with no problem at all! We were very impressed and believe this was a testament to her great sense of self esteem and confidence in the love that surrounds her.

Thay's passing into the cloudland

A poem to commemorate the passing of Thich Nhat Hahn on January 22, 2022 at midnight.

The winds blow with no coming and no going

The waves roll but do not move

The mountain sits firmly on shifting ground

What is essential remains in that groundless expanse

I first met Thich Nhat Hahn in 2009 when I went to Omega Institute in New York. I was expecting there to be about 50 people, as it was billed as a small gathering for a weekend meditation. It turned out to be an overflow of 500 people crammed into the main hall. At first I was disappointed thinking the experience would be dimmed by the numbers. In fact I couldn't have been more wrong. Being in the presence of Thay with 500 other people of single mind and purpose only served to magnify his peaceful presence and spiritual power. Have you ever been with 500 people and could hear a pin drop? Very moving. I especially remember the walking meditation. Thay gathered the children around him, They had the choice position, some even holding his hand. I was just beautiful to see how deeply they were connected. Thay knew that the idea of Interbeing was most fully appreciated by young childre who didn't need much convincing to believe in their connection to everything and everyone, especially children lucky enough to have parents that would bring them to Omega for a meditation retreat!
